This area of dentistry is very aptly named. It describes maintenance and screenings that ‘prevent’ oral health problems from developing or advancing. It’s no accident that many insurance plans happily cover routine dental exams. That’s because they’re well aware of the value of these exams in preventing the development of more serious, costly problems down the line. Following are the preventive steps that will help you maintain your oral health:

Schedule a dental exam and cleaning every 6 months. Minor issues can become big problems if they’re not caught early.

  • For example, a cavity that’s detected early usually requires just a simple filling. An untreated cavity can result in serious, painful infections that can also damage nerves. A patient can end up needing a root canal or a tooth extraction.
  • Gum disease is another significant threat to both oral and general health. According to the Centers for Disease Control, more than half of the U.S. population over the age of 30 suffers from periodontitis (gum disease). Periodontitis is also the single biggest cause of tooth loss.

Regular dental screenings catch and address cavities and gum disease early so that they don’t turn into serious more serious issues.

Did you know that children age 6-14 are more cavity-prone? Because of this, we recommend that once your child’s permanent molars and pre-molars come in that you have a dental sealant applied to help prevent cavities.

Here are some recommendations to keeping up your child’s teeth cavity free:

  • The application of dental sealant is a simple, totally painless process that helps protect your child’s teeth for about 10 years.
  • Use dental floss or some other inter-dental tool to remove plaque and food particles from between your teeth. A recent study shows that poor flossing techniques can reduce the oral health benefits gained by flossing.
  • Brush your teeth at least twice a day.  We recommend brushing with a soft-bristled toothbrush. You should also replace your toothbrush every 3-4 months.

If you’re unsure if you’re flossing properly, please ask our dental hygienist to demonstrate the proper way to floss.

If you have children, we can give them a lesson as well. It’s better to teach them how to floss properly from the start!
